Recerca:

The Structural and Molecular Pathology Group, recognized as a consolidated research group by AGAUR, performs translational research in the areas of cancer and neurodegeneration. The group, composed of pathologists, biologists, clinicians, and biochemists, works on human tissue samples. Its strategy is to approach the molecular mechanisms of cancer (cutaneous, lymphoid, gastrointestinal, cerebral) and neurodegeneration (synucleinopathies) from a pathology-rooted morphological perspective.

Presentation:

The Pathology Department makes the diagnosis of tumors and contributes very significantly to the diagnosis of many other types of disease by means of morphomolecular studies of cytologies, biopsies, and surgical specimens. To carry out this task, the key tool is the light microscopic study of cytological, histological, histochemical, and immunohistochemical slides. Immunofluorescence, electron microscopy, and molecular pathology techniques are often applied as well.

The HUGTP Pathology Department receives anatomic pathology samples from three hospitals (HUGTP, Hospital Municipal de Badalona, Hospital de l’Esperit Sant) and several other centers of the Northern Metropolitan Health Region of Catalonia (including primary care, specialized care, and ASSIR). The department was granted the ISO 9001:2008 certification in 2009 and regularly participates in the external quality assurance program of the Spanish Society of Pathology (SEAP-IAP).

The department’s pathologists and biologists teach pathology to students of medicine and biomedical Sciences at the HUGTP Teaching Unit of the School of Medicine, Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). The department has a residency program approved by the Spanish Ministry of Health for the training of eight residents (two per year) and also teaches a number of anatomic pathology technicians from the Pinar, Bonanova, and Guineueta schools.

Staff members are deeply involved in research activities, both as principal investigators and as collaborators in projects of other Can Ruti Campus groups (Germans Trias i Pujol Institute, IMPPC, Institut Josep Carreras Institute, IrsiCaixa, etc).
