Presentation:
The Germans Trias Stroke Unit is a limited area of intermediate care and restricted access within Neurosciences, dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with acute stroke. The unit has its own equipment and human resources consisting of a medical team, made up of specialists in vascular neurology, and a nursing team that has extensive training and experience in the care of patients with acute stroke. In the Stroke Unit, standardized medical and nursing protocols are applied 24 hours a day. Patients admitted to a stroke unit are more likely to survive and have a situation of functional independence.
The unit is the reference center of stroke for a population of almost 800,000 inhabitants of various municipalities of Barceloní Nord and Maresme. In addition, Germans Trias is a Tertiary Center of reference for the most complex cases in the area of Barcelonès Nord and Maresme and Girona.
The functions of the Germans Trias stroke unit are:
-
Coordinate the pre-hospital (Code Ictus) and intra-hospital circuit for the diagnosis and treatment of ischaemic stroke (caused by an obstruction) and brain haemorrhage (caused by the breakage of a brain artery) in its hyperacute phase, as well as its subsequent complications
-
To offer urgent diagnosis and treatment to patients arriving at the emergency department, which includes clinical stabilization, administering intravenous thrombolytic treatment or endovascular treatment in all patients who require it, or deciding on urgent neurosurgical techniques
-
Carry out a complete neurovascular diagnosis in patients with cerebrovascular diseases to know the cause of stroke: ultrasonography studies, cardiac ultrasound, detection of heart arrhythmias, brain vascular study through angioTC, resonance or brain angiography, targeted analytical determinations
-
Offer the necessary medical and nursing care to prevent, detect early and treat possible complications after a stroke
-
Offering information on the disease and health education to patients and relatives affected by stroke
-
Carry out out out outpatient clinical follow-up of patients in the health area to know their clinical evolution, complete the study of the cause of stroke and detect needs and possible complications
-
To follow a protocolized work system in the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of stroke.
-
Coordinate the activity with the multidisciplinary intervention of the services and units involved in stroke care, including neuroradiology, neurosurgery, rehabilitation, social work
-
To offer training and training in the care of cerebrovascular diseases to residents and neurologists, as well as other professionals involved in the care of patients with strokes, such as nurses, internists or rehabilitators of the hospital itself and other centers
-
Enhance clinical research on acute stroke in the fields of neuroimaging, molecular, genetic and therapeutic, neuroreparation and secondary prevention
