CSUR: Advanced endoscopic treatment using POEM in adult patients with Primary Acalasia Type III
The Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital is a reference Centre, Service and Unit in advanced endoscopic treatment using POEM in adult patients with Primary Acalasia Type III.
Acalasia is a rare disease of the esophagus that affects the ability of the esophagic muscle to relax and allow the normal passage of food into the stomach. This causes swallowing difficulties, chest pain and, in some cases, weight loss and food regurgitation.
Although it is an uncommon disease, akalasia can affect anyone, regardless of age. It is estimated that the annual incidence in the general population is 1 to 2 cases per 100,000 people.
Why should it be diagnosed, controlled and treated in a specialised reference centre?
Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential to control the disease and improve the patient’s quality of life. Acalasia requires a multidisciplinary approach, since its treatment may include endoscopic procedures, surgery or pharmacological therapy. In a specialized reference center such as the Germans Trias, we have the experience and advanced technology necessary to provide an accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment, ensuring the best results for patients.
Treatment with POEM (Endoscopic Peroral Myotomy)
One of the most innovative and effective treatments for acalasia is endoscopic peroral myotomy (POEM), a minimally invasive technique that allows cutting the muscle that prevents the passage of food, without the need for open surgery. We are pioneers in the use of POEM, and we have extensive experience in its application. In addition, we continue to investigate and improve the technique, extending its indications to treat other motor diseases of the esophagus. This advanced approach allows our patients to recover oesophageal function with faster recovery and fewer complications compared to traditional treatments.
