Major ambulatory surgery

Outpatient surgery, or major ambulatory surgery (MAS), is a type of surgery where you arrive, undergo the procedure and are discharged from the hospital the same day. It may include local, regional or general anesthesia.

The Germans Trias Hospital performs an average of over 30 outpatient surgeries per day, in almost all specializations.

Pre-anesthesia appointment

If you have this type of surgery scheduled, you will have an appointment with the anesthesiologist at the hospital a few days in advance in order to prepare for your surgery. This contact may also be by phone, especially if we already have your recent clinical history.

If you have to come for the pre-anesthesia appointment, it will take place in the Major ambulatory surgery office (2nd. floor, operating rooms area).

During the pre-anesthesia appointment, we will inform you about the preoperatory fasting.

After the pre-anesthesia appointment, we will call you to confirm the date of the surgery.

We will also set a date for a PCR test 48-72 hours before the surgery.

On the day of the surgery

On the day of the surgery, you should:

  • Bring your regular medication with you
  • Wear comfortable clothes. For children, bring pajamas and slippers.
  • Not bring jewelry, money or makeup
  • Not wear nailpolish nor artificial nails
  • Arrive on an empty stomach and bring someone with you

You should have taken an shower the night before and on the day or the surgery just before you come to the hospital.

When you arrive, depending on the procedure, you should go either

  • to the Major Ambulatory Surgery Unit -MAS- (2nd. floor)
  • or to the Surgical Patient Reception Uit -SPRU- (1st. floor)

A member of the staff will take you to the surgical area, where you can leave your things in a locker and give the key to the person who came with you.

Once the procedure is over, you will be under observation for a few hours. The person who came with you will enter at the end of the process (except with children, who can be accompained by a family member all the time).

Going home

You will not be able to drive or take public transport to get back home. Someone should be responsible for taking you there.

Once at home, you will need someone with you for the first 24 hours and a phone. The day after the procedure, you will receive a call from the hospital to check how you are doing.

You will leave the hospital with your analgesic prescription. You can also download your medication plan through La Meva Salut.
