The Neurosciences area carries out clinical, basic and translational research. It is recognized and funded by the AGAUR agency of the Generalitat de Catalunya and is part of the RICORS network of the Carlos III Health Institute of the Spanish Government. Neurosciences has prospective records of patients in cerebral vascular disease, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, movement disorders, etc., as well as biological and tissue sample banks.
Clinical research is carried out in collaboration with researchers from the services of Radiodiagnostics, Pathological Anatomy, Paediatrics and Immunology. It has neurologists dedicated to research thanks to contracts Riu Hortega and Juan Rodés, intensifications Trias Sapiens, senior research biologists with Miguel Servet contracts and predoctoral fellows with Germans Trias Talents grants or with projects funded by ISC III or other entities. In addition, Neurosciences has nursing and administrative staff hired with exclusive research tasks. Participation in phase II and III clinical trials and the generation of competitive research projects are promoted.

Presentation:
The Neurosciences area of the Germans Trias Hospital began to develop in November 2004 when the then manager, Enric Argelagués, commissioned Dr Antoni D'valos to direct the Neurology and Neurosurgery services and develop the Interventional Neuroradiology section. The project was based on the health importance of neurosciences in relation to the progressive ageing of the population and, especially, on the high prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases and brain vascular diseases. Another reason was the need to have, in the hospitals of the Catalan Institute of Health, high-complexity treatment units (tertiary) in the field of Neurosciences, while opening the possibility of carrying out biomedical research within the framework of the Germans Trias Institute. After almost 20 years of implementation and development of tertiary clinical units in all areas of neuroscience, since 2023 the clinical management is led by Dr. Mònica Millán.
Neurosciences of Germans Trias encompasses:
- The Neurology Service
- The Neurosurgery Service
- The Interventional Neuroradiology Section
- As well as specialized units that are part of the previous services
The work of the Neurosciences area is carried out in:
- Hospitalization, on the 7th floor of the General Tower, with 39 beds, six of which are semi-critical in the Acute Stroke Unit and one in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
- Consultations and cabinets, on the 1st floor and on the ground floor
- Operating rooms.
- Interventional Neuroradiology Room
- Areas of work of hospital professionals
- Germans Trias i Pujol Health Sciences Research Institute
As for the facilities, it has:
- Unit of stroke and laboratory of cerebral hemodynamics
- Electroencephalogram cabinet and epilepsy monitoring unit
- Functional testing and intraoperative monitoring cabinet
- Neurosurgery surgery and interventional neuroradiology
- Laboratory of Functional and Translational Neurogenetics
- Research laboratories of the Germans Trias Institute

Pregraduate teaching
The Neurosciences area participates in the training of students in the 5th year of the Degree in Medicine at the UAB at the Ca Ruti Campus, as well as in the rotary practices of 6th year students. The coordinating professors are Dr. Mònica Millsn (Neurology) and Dr. Carlos Domínguez (Neurosurgery).
The department also has a long history in the practical training of nursing students from different universities, in undergraduate, post-graduate and master's degrees.
Since 2023, she has been participating in the training of the 1st promotion of the Bachelor's Degree in Nursing at the Can Ruti Campus.
Postgraduate teaching
-
The Neurosciences area participates in the training of residents. Currently, three neurology residents and one neurosurgery resident are incorporated every year. The tutors of residents are doctors Juan Luis Becerra, Meritxell Gomis, Lourdes Ispierto and Manel Tard.guila. Residents can carry out all the specific rotations of the training program of the specialty in the department itself, but optionally they can perform an external national or international rotation in a subarea of training interest.
-
In addition, the area of Neurosciences participates in the training of residents of other specialties who carry out rotations in neurology, neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology.
-
It also welcomes residents from other national and international hospitals as well as general neurologists and other specialists for their specific training in specialized units.
