UEC a l'Hospital Germans Trias

Hospital Germans Trias is accredited with two UECs, or Clinical Expertise Units: UEC Neuromuscular Diseases and UEC Rare Diseases with epilepsy

UEC Rare diseases with epilepsy

Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital has a Clinical Expertise Unit that treats rare diseases with epilepsy.

Epilepsy associated with rare diseases is individually uncommon, but as a group they are the main cause of epilepsy in tertiary care centres.

The causes are diverse, and include genetic disorders, metabolic disorders, brain malformations, infections, autoimmune diseases or combinations of these. Patients with these diseases present a poor treatment response, with multiple daily episodes and severe effects on psychomotor development and mortality. This significantly affects the quality of life of both patients and their caregivers, posing a challenge to healthcare systems in terms of diagnosis and treatment.

At Germans Trias we treat the following group of rare epilepsies:

  • Structural epilepsy.

  • Genetic diseases with epilepsy.

  • Autoimmune epilepsy.

  • Metabolic diseases with epilepsy.

  • Infectious diseases with epilepsy.

  • Other epilepsies.

The coordinator of the Clinical Expert Unit for rare diseases with epilepsy at Germans Trias is also the coordinator of the Network of Clinical Expert Units for rare epilepsies.
