Clinical Directorate of Obstetrics and Gynecology

At the beginning of 2017, the Territorial Clinical Directorate of Gynecology and Obstetrics was created.

  • Clinical director: Sergio Martínez

The Clinical Directorate of Gynecology and Obstetrics is integrated by:

Its launch meant the implementation of a new model that includes more than 150 professionals and whose objective is to offer excellent and prestigious assistance, in which both primary and local care is prioritized, as well as the development of specialized tertiary care at the Hospital.

To make this approach to coordination and continuity of care effective, different transversal structures of a territorial and interdisciplinary nature are combined, such as the Territorial Unit of Fetal Medicine, the Functional Unit of Gynecology Oncology, the Functional Unit of Breast Cancer or the Unit of Cervical and Vulvar Pathology.

The mobility of professionals between the hospital and the ASSIRs is also enhanced, with the concentration of expertise in references for obstetric and gynecological sub-processes, liaison consultations with the hospital, continuing education programs, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and shared research projects.

Parallel to the promotion of tertiary care and high technology (advanced oncological surgery, robotics, fetal diagnostics and therapeutics, etc.) special interest has been placed in the qualitative aspects of assistance, such as the promotion of initiatives to humanize obstetric care with maximum safety and minimal interventionism, surgical safety, citizen participation and respect for diversity.

These are the specific values of the Clinical Directorate:

  • Mission
Offer sexual and reproductive health care of the highest level of effectiveness and efficiency, based on the best available evidence, participatory and respectful of diversity to the women of Badalona and Sant Adrià with the aim of improving their overall health, quality of life and level of satisfaction.

Towards an Obstetrics adapted to the times

In recent years, efforts have been made to improve the quality of care for women in their sexual and reproductive health, and especially during the maternity, birth and post-birth care process. These improvements have considered not only the advances based on the use of technology, which have allowed advances in diagnostic and therapeutic techniques (which guarantee maximum safety for the mother and baby), but have also progressively introduced the concept of improvement in treatment so that it becomes more respectful, and in achieving a better perception of satisfaction in women and families who use public health services.

This reality is part of the current review of how gender impacts on health, beyond biological determinants. Incorporating the gender perspective in health has a great impact, in all medical spheres, which is allowing progress to be made in correcting the historical bias of an androcentric and hetero-patriarchal social and health model, and it precisely has particular connotations in the field of sexual and reproductive health.

The Clinical Directorate shares this broader, respectful and inclusive view of maternal-fetal care, which is why different actions and intervention tools are being deployed, among which it is worth noting:

  • Conditioning, remodeling and humanization of sexual and reproductive health care spaces.
  • Humanization of the maternal-fetal care and support model. Improved satisfaction and lived experience.
  • Laietania Birth Center. Strengthening the role of the midwife as a reference professional for low-complexity pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Accreditation of the iHAN breastfeeding center.
  • Multidisciplinary commission on "Prevention of obstetric violence".
  • Rationalization and monitoring of indicators of unnecessary obstetric interventionism.
